Dr. Brian Ribeiro: Treating Traumatic Brain Injury

According to the Defense Health Agency, nearly half a million Service Members have been diagnosed with a first-time traumatic brain injury (TBI) since 2000. TBI can cause patients to suffer from chronic headaches and memory loss, along with balance and vision issues. Martin Army Community Hospital’s Dr. Brian Ribeiro helps treat some of these Soldiers.

Virtual program helps diabetic patients better manage their insulin

The Diabetes Remote Electronic Assisted Monitoring, or DREAM, program focuses on teaching patients how to measure and adjust their insulin independently based on their provider’s instructions. A team from the Military Health System Virtual Medical Center worked with the Diabetes Center of Excellence at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center to develop a program to help augment a patient’s diabetes treatment plan, providing support to the patient between provider appointments. The program is available for patients and providers across the San Antonio Military Healthcare System.

Staff Sgt. Gene Calantoc: Perseverance in the new normal

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced changes and challenges that continue to affect the way of life for everyone. Through perseverance, the Army is using innovative ways to deal with the “new normal.” One group in particular that are making the adjustment are wounded, ill, and injured service members in Soldier Recovery Units across the Army. The month of March typically finds some of them preparing to gather at Fort Bliss, Texas, to participate in the Army Trials. However, this year the Army Recovery Care Program, keeping safety paramount for participants and staff, executed the Trials virtually.

National Kick Butts Day is March 20. Kick Butts is an annual campaign celebration of youth leadership and activism in the fight against tobacco. This year due to COVID-19 restrictions, Kick Butts activities are suspended, however, when restrictions are lifted Kick Butt activities for youth will be begin.
