Walter Reed Pediatric Dentistry Team Provides Dental Screenings at Child Development Centers in National Capital Region

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center's pediatric dentistry team is taking proactive efforts to improve dental health among children within the military health system throughout the National Capital Region (NCR). Riding on the annual observance of Children's Dental Health Month, the team will provide dental screenings to children ages 3 to 5, at five Child Development Centers (CDCs) across the NCR.

DOD’s first dual-patient ECMO C-17 transport

The Department of Defense’s only Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) team travelled to El Paso, Texas, on Oct. 23, 2023, to support a civilian patient with acute respiratory distress syndrome. The ECMO team, located at Brooke Army Medical Center possesses the capability for global transports of all service members. Additionally, the team may also transport civilian patients through the Secretarial Designee program or with the Secretary of the Air Force’s approval. Once approval is granted, the medics use any means necessary to quickly reach the patient.

Coast Guardsmen cruise to physician assistant duties after IPAP graduation

FORT CAVAZOS, Texas – The first ever Coast Guardsmen graduated from the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center Interservice Physician Assistant Program in a ceremony at the hospital 1 Feb. IPAP is the largest PA program in the world and ranks amongst the top 15 programs in the nation. It was first established in 1996 when the Army, Navy, and Air Force combined their various PA programs to form IPAP. Today, all branches, including Coast Guard, can apply for this intense 28-month program exclusive to military personnel.

The TRICARE Pharmacy Program is improving how we manage specialty drugs. Starting March 1, Accredo will provide specialty drugs and enhanced clinical services if you fill TRICARE-defined specialty prescriptions with TRICARE Home Delivery. Accredo will also stay in the TRICARE network as an in-network retail pharmacy.

Operation AGILE Medic: Joint Forces Collaborate in Full-Spectrum Medical Readiness Exercise

In December 2023, military forces conducted Operation AGILE Medic (OAM) at Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis, Texas. Over 100 medical professionals collaborated to enhance full-spectrum medical readiness. The exercise addressed communication and training gaps, incorporating stress-inducing scenarios and a phased training approach. Emphasizing adaptability, OAM scenarios prepared personnel for operational challenges, fostering teamwork. The exercise highlighted the importance of unified efforts, creating a close-knit, trusted team, and demonstrating the effectiveness of joint training exercises in achieving mission readiness.

National Children’s Dental Health Month: Walter Reed dentists encourage brushing up on oral hygiene

Feb. 1 begins National Children’s Dental Health Month, observed to bring awareness to the importance of oral hygiene and “how it can positively impact the entire body,” said Navy Cmdr. (Dr.) Bradley Bennett, Hospital Dental Department chief, Pediatric Dentistry at Walter Reed.
