TAMC Nurses Week: Meet Lilibeth “Beth” Cayanan

By Hugh Fleming and Amelia Dickson

Today we recognize Lilibeth “Beth” Cayanan. She has been at Tripler since May of 1998 — 25 years! She has mostly worked in the operating room, but she has also ventured to plastic surgery and surgical subspecialties from 2005 to 2006. She graduated with a degree in nursing in the Philippines, but honed her nursing skills at Tripler.

Learn more about Beth Cayanan in the Q&A below!

Q: What inspired you to become a nurse?
A friend inspired me to become a nurse.

Q: What are five reasons to become a nurse?
  1. It has been a calling for me, I love that I can be there for patients when their family can’t.
  2. Perioperative nursing is very rewarding because most of the time we’re able to provide care that can be life changing or improve a patient’s overall health.
  3. It is good money.
  4. There are a lot of specialties that you can venture into in nursing. Whatever your passion is, you will eventually find it in nursing.
  5. We need more compassionate nurses

Q: What advice would you give to a student interested in becoming a nurse?
Do it for the right reason, not because someone else wants you to or you just want to make good money. This profession is like a vocation, and you have to know in your heart that this is what you want.

Q: How do you inspire future nurses?
By being positive, caring and giving my 100 percent every time. I am here for my patients, my doctors and my coworkers. I love what I do, and I hope it shows all the time.
