Dermatology eConsults make skin care easier

By 59th Medical Wing

A new dermatology eConsult service from the 59th Medical Wing is making it easier than ever for patients to receive expert skin care—without setting foot in a clinic.

Through the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal, beneficiaries can now submit photos and a short medical questionnaire directly to the Dermatology team at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. Providers review cases within 48 hours, offering timely recommendations, follow-up care, or referrals when needed.

“This eConsult option gives patients flexibility and faster access to care,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Edens, director of the 59th Medical Wing’s Dermatology Clinic at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center. “It’s ideal for many common skin concerns, and it can all be done from home.”

Whether it’s a rash, suspicious mole, or acne that won’t go away, the eConsult service helps streamline care and avoid long wait times.

Patients simply log into MHS GENESIS, send a message to “Lackland Dermatology eConsult,” and include clear photos along with their responses to a short list of questions.

The program is part of a broader effort to expand asynchronous telehealth—a form of virtual care that doesn't require a live video call or in-person visit. It provides more privacy, convenience, and access for busy service members and families.

When it comes to dermatological care, TRICARE does not cover cosmetic services such as the removal of benign (non-cancerous) moles or skin tags, asymptomatic varicose vein treatments, or most non-scarring alopecia or hair loss. Still, for medically appropriate concerns, the eConsult system ensures patients get the care they need—quickly and efficiently.
