Fort Gregg-Adams, VA –
SFC Joseph Swartz was recently named the winner of the 2025 Fit for Duty Challenge, hosted by the Armed Forces Wellness Center. After his promotion in November 2024, Swartz became more aware of his physical appearance—especially in photographs—and recognized it was time for a lifestyle change. That realization led him to the challenge, which is designed to help service members, dependents, DOD civilians, and retirees enhance their overall wellness.
As a drill sergeant, Swartz faced demanding hours and an unpredictable schedule. Establishing a consistent sleep routine and cooking around his workload were ongoing challenges. The semi-structured environment of his role helped him stay grounded, but it was the tools provided by the challenge that helped him stay on track.
“Having a checklist of tasks in front of me was instrumental to my success,” said Swartz. “Knowing that I had non-negotiable tasks helped me to effectively plan for success.”
Over the course of the challenge, Swartz experienced significant physical and mental changes. He lost 8.3% body fat, reduced his fat mass by 19.3 pounds, and gained 1.6 pounds of fat-free mass. In addition to his improved appearance, he reported feeling more mobile, physically fit, and mentally resilient. Through self-reflection and stress management, he also gained a calmer, more confident outlook.
Swartz credits the Armed Forces Wellness Center for its supportive resources, including the Resting Metabolic Rate test, monthly Bod Pod assessments, and the daily checklist—which he continues to use as part of his wellness routine.
