Kenner services open through COVID-19

By Glenda Coley, Clinical Service Division Chief

During this global COVID-19 pandemic, Kenner Army Health Clinic is continuing to operate and offer the services needed by its beneficiaries. Kenner has implemented a one-way-entrance to control entry into the building and maximize social distancing. Patients will be screened per Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines prior to entering the building.  All patients entering the building are required to wear a face covering without valves such as a surgical mask, cloth mask, scarf or bandana.  Only those with an appointment are allowed into the building unless the patient requires a guardian.
In order to provide safety and continued quality of care to our beneficiaries, we have curtailed some of our services and made changes in some of our processes to include increasing virtual (telephone) appointments. To include the clinic is closed for lunch from noon- 1 p.m. for all services.
Radiology hours of operation are 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Laboratory hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The lab takes the last patient and drop off specimen at 4:15 p.m.
Currently the clinic has curtailed hearing tests and most procedures such as Pulmonary Function Test, nebulizer treatments, and well women exams.  Kenner is diligently working to reopen hearing test sites while prioritizing safety first.  Our policy is being reviewed. We will notify the community as soon as hearing tests are available.
Dermatology is operating as usual to include procedures with the exception of incisional biopsy. A referral for Kenner Dermatology can be made through your primary care provider.
Primary Care Clinics (Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Active Duty Clinic) have been seeing patients face-to-face only when an assessment cannot be fully determined by phone. Otherwise, Kenner is maximizing the usage of virtual appointments.  As the facility moves back to “new normal” operations, Kenner is looking to maintain a large number of virtual appointments as an option to improve access to patients.
Primary Care Clinics are still providing physical exams such as well-baby/child exams, Exceptional Family Member Program physicals, and overseas physicals and pre-op physicals in mostly morning appointments.  Afternoon appointments are reserved for acute or other symptomatic illnesses. This allows a separation between well visit patients and sick patients.  Immunizations and medication administration for all clinics will continue based on clinic operations and with face-to-face appointments only. There are no walk-in services available; every primary care patient must have an appointment.
The clinic is providing retirement and chapter physicals face-to-face. Readiness physicals (PHAs) are performed virtually as long as the Service Member has had their blood pressure taken within the last year.
Eagle Eye Optometry Clinic is continuing services for Active Duty Service Member or Refractions, Physicals, MEDPROS vision screenings and broken spectacle repair (only if the Service Member does not have another set of glasses and clinic has the parts).  In addition, the optometrist will do glaucoma (no visual fields) and diabetic eye exams for all beneficiaries.  All patients are directed to call the Optometry front desk to schedule readiness visits at 804-734-9253.  G-eyes online glasses ordering is available for all Active Duty patients for prescription orders with current spectacle prescription in the system.
Physical Therapy and Orthopedics are limiting face-to-face services due to the social distancing requirements. PT is staggering schedules to maintain cleanliness. PT/Ortho is triaging all patients and fulfilling appointments either virtually or face-to-face depending on severity and needs. These clinics are maintaining their ability to treat all injuries but prioritizing readiness-related treatments at this time.
Behavioral Health services have curtailed walk-in appointments. All appointments must be scheduled.  Crisis care is currently being deferred to off post ER facilities. Ongoing individual therapy and medication management, substance abuse follow up, and Child and Family Behavioral Health Services (CFBHS) are available by virtual (telephonic) appointments. Post-hospital discharge, specialty evaluations and psychological testing, Family Advocacy Program and initial substance abuse appointments continue to be available face-to-face by appointment only.
To better assist and provide safety for our student population, we are scheduling appointments at our Troop Medical Clinics. The Army Initial Training Soldiers must communicate through their units since their units will be scheduling their appointments.
To make an appointment please contact the Kenner Army Health Clinic Appointment Line at 1-866-LEE-KAHC (533-5242) during the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. After duty hours, beneficiaries should call the Nurse Advice Line at 1-800-TRICARE and choose option 1.  The Nurse Advice Line is available 24/7. You may also schedule and appointment on Tricare Online at https://www.tricare.mil.
