Educational Outreach Initiative: Inspiring Elementary Students in Infectious Disease Research and Biosafety Practices

Dr. Jesus Silvas from the 59th Medical Wing and Dr. Israel Guerrero from the Texas Biomedical Research Institute visited Mendez Elementary School to introduce 2nd–5th grade students to careers in infectious disease research and biosafety. Through interactive demonstrations, including letting students try on a Biosafety Level 4 Positive Pressure Suit, they showcased safety protocols, high-containment lab work, and the importance of disease prevention. The event inspired curiosity in science, emphasized the role of public health, and highlighted the value of early STEM engagement in developing future leaders.

New Army policy better enables victims to report sexual assault

A new policy recently implemented by the Army is designed to help remove possible barriers that may prevent Soldiers from reporting sexual assault. Army Directive 2022-10, Safe-to-Report for Victims of Sexual Assault, provides sexual assault victims certain protections from disciplinary action for minor collateral misconduct that may be associated with the sexual assault incident.

Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Pearl Harbor (NMRTC-PH) stood up an Expeditionary Testing Team (ETT) in April to conduct mass operational COVID-19 testing. Created in a moment’s notice, their mission is to help ensure operational readiness of the fleet during the COVID-19 pandemic.
