(Aug. 31, 2026) — Today, the Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center (ATAMMC) proudly marks 15 years of delivering compassionate, high-quality care to service members, beneficiaries, families, and veterans. Established on August 31, 2011, the facility has served as a cornerstone of health and readiness for the National Capital Region (NCR), consistently demonstrating a Culture of Excellence.

A Timeline of Growth and Transformation

ATAMMC’s journey is defined by a series of historic milestones that reflect its evolution into a premier medical institution:

• May 13, 2005: The Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission recommended—and the President subsequently approved—the closure of DeWitt Army Community Hospital and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, paving the way for a state-of-the-art joint facility designed to meet the modern needs of military beneficiaries. These recommendations became law on November 9, 2005. The leaders of the Dewitt Health Network were instrumental in the development of the plan.
• November 8, 2007: Hospital leaders, Department of Defense and Fort Belvoir Garrison officials, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, community leaders, and construction partners broke ground on Fort Belvoir’s South Post Golf Course.
• August 31, 2011: The new facility officially opened its doors as Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, welcoming its first patients and establishing a new standard of collaborative military medicine.
• May 16, 2023: In a historic milestone, the facility was officially re-designated as the Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center. Named in honor of Lt. Col. Alexander T. • September 9, 2025: ATAMMC is designated a Core Casualty Receiving Facility (CCRF), enshrining the critical role of the hospital in support of operations around the globe and as a facility trusted for excellence in combat casualty care.

Enhancing Readiness and Clinical Excellence

As a vital combat support facility, ATAMMC's recent designation as a Military Medical Center and its role as a Core Casualty Receiving Facility represent a significant leap forward. These critical designations actively support the development of highly skilled clinical practitioners and build robust operational readiness among both the medical staff and the diverse population the center serves.

Operating as a Level III trauma center, running the largest family medicine Graduate Medical Education (GME) program in the DOW, and the only military medical center in Northern Virginia, ATAMMC ensures that medical forces remain trained and ready for any mission while offering elite care to its local community. Recent ATAMMC awards include four consecutive Leapfrog Group “A” hospital safety grades and the Leapfrog Full Transparency Badge, the CNOR ® Strong Designation (Perioperative Nursing), a 5-Star Care Transitions Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid, Disruptive Tech “Change Agent” Award in the federal IT sector, and a “Blue H” Health Promotion and Wellness Award (Gold Star Level) from the Navy Surgeon General.
