59th Medical Wing Partners with BioMedSA to Accelerate Medical Technology Commercialization

By 59th Medical Wing Chief Scientist’s Office, Science & Technology

The 59th Medical Wing (59 MDW) Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center recently executed a new partnership agreement with BioMedSA to advance medical science and technology. This collaboration utilizes a Partnership Intermediary Agreement to bridge the gap between military medical research and commercial healthcare solutions, facilitating joint activities with educational institutions and small businesses.

As a premier health care, medical education and research, and readiness organization in the Defense Health Agency (DHA), Defense Heath Network-Central, the 59 MDW enables millions of dollars in scientific research annually. The organization focuses on top military medical priorities, including trauma critical care, en-route care, trainee healthcare, and clinical medicine. To maximize the real-world impact of this research, the 59 MDW relies on strategic partnerships. BioMedSA, a non-profit organization founded in 2005, serves as the central hub for San Antonio’s bioscience industry strategically focused on research efforts in five areas: trauma and wound care, infectious diseases, neurological diseases, regenerative medicine, and chronic diseases with an emphasis on diabetes and cancer.  By connecting resources and convening industry leaders, BioMedSA will help the 59 MDW expand its cooperative research capabilities and build upon the region's biomedical assets to address DHA’s top joint warfighter, military family, and beneficiaries’ healthcare needs.

Moving cutting-edge research from the laboratory bench to the commercial marketplace requires specialized skill sets that differ from traditional research and development. While the 59 MDW consistently succeeds at identifying and developing technologies to improve armed forces readiness, commercializing unclassified technologies presents unique logistical challenges. This partnership directly addresses that complex transition. Successful commercialization enables the government and the public to benefit from lower production costs, faster equipment availability, and enhanced product reliability, driven by competitive commercial markets.

Dr. Scott Walter, Director for Technology Transfer and Transition at the 59 MDW Chief Scientist’s Office, and Dr. Heather Hanson, President of BioMedSA, will serve as the designated representatives leading this initiative. Together, they will work to identify pathways where commercial firms and academic institutions can productively utilize technology-related assistance from federal laboratories.

This strategic alliance builds upon San Antonio’s robust health and science capabilities while creating regional economic benefits. Ultimately, by accelerating the commercialization of vital medical innovations, the partnership ensures that modern military medical platforms and the broader public healthcare system remain rapidly deployable, responsive, and highly advanced for years to come.
