A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center Commemorates Health Information Professionals’ Week April 20-24, 2026: Honoring the Guardians of Patient Data Security and Accessibility

By Reese Brown

(April 20, 2026)-- A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center (ATAMMC) proudly observes Health Information Professionals’ Week from April 20 to 24, 2026. This annual celebration, sponsored by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), highlights the essential contributions of health information (HI) professionals who ensure the accuracy, security, and accessibility of vital patient data.

“Health information professionals serve as the backbone of healthcare data management. Their vigilance and dedication are crucial not just for operational integrity but also for patient safety and privacy,” said Mr. Sunny O. Edokpayi, ATAMMC HIPAA Privacy Compliance Officer. “Health care information must be protected so patients can trust us that their sensitive information is in good hands. If they cannot trust us, everything else falls apart.”

The Role of Health Information Professionals at ATAMMC

At ATAMMC, health information professionals undertake a variety of important responsibilities, including:

  • Accuracy and Quality Control: By meticulously managing patient records and ensuring that all data is up-to-date, HI professionals facilitate high-quality healthcare delivery.
  • Data Security: With stringent protocols in place, they protect patient health information (PHI) from unauthorized access and breaches, thus fostering patient trust.
  • Accessibility for Patients: Through advancements in technology, patients can now access their medical records conveniently via the MHS Genesis Patient Portal. “These days, patients can view and read their electronic medical record documentation within days of a healthcare provider completing their encounter notes, from any device,” Edokpayi added.
  • Interdepartmental Liaison: Acting as a bridge between healthcare providers and patients, HI professionals ensure seamless communication and coordination concerning health records.
  • Compliance and Training: HI teams oversee compliance with health information regulations and conduct training sessions to maintain a culture of privacy and security.

A Call to Action

During Health Information Professionals’ Week, ATAMMC urges the community to appreciate those who may seldom receive recognition for their work. “Reach out to a health information professional and thank them for their dedication. Consider how vital their role is in the healthcare system,” Edokpayi encourages.
