Protecting Health, Strengthening Readiness: Fort Meade Public Health in Action

By Carla Benjamin

The Department of Public Health at Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center will host a walk-through “show and tell” event April 9, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., offering the Fort Meade Community an opportunity to learn more about available public health services and programs.

The event, held in recognition of National Public Health Week (April 6-12), will highlight how the department works to reduce health risks and supports the health and readiness of service members, families, and staff.

At Fort Meade, the Department of Public Health–formerly Preventive Medicine Services– includes several specialized sections: Armed Forces Wellness Center, Army Public Health Nursing, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, and Occupational Health. These teams work together and with installation and community partners to deliver services that prevent illness, identify health risks, and promote safe environments across the installation.

The Department of Public Health at Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center plays a central role in protecting the health and readiness of the Fort Meade community. Through prevention, surveillance, and education, the team helps protect service members, families, and beneficiaries by promoting healthy habits and encouraging early detection of health concerns.

Public health efforts focus on improving individual and community well-being across a range of settings, including homes, workplaces, and operational environments. In addition to supporting community health, the department contributes to military readiness by addressing health risks that may impact the force.

Through ongoing outreach and education, the Department of Public Health continues to support a safe and healthy Fort Meade community.
