MCAS Cherry Point  –   Safety, accuracy and precision define the day for Hospital Corpsman Second Class Dru Calloway as he leads a team contributing to the medical readiness of MCAS Cherry Point service members and the wellness of their family members. 

Calloway is the Leading Petty Officer for the laboratory aboard Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point, a team responsible for supporting medical readiness of the base by equipping Sailors and Marines and their medical providers with accurate test results delivered in a timely manner.

“The laboratory plays a critical role in supporting patient care,” said the Fallbrook, California native.  “We provide timely and accurate diagnostic testing that directly impacts clinical decisions, operational readiness, and overall mission success.”

Lab staff draw blood and receive samples from patients which then undergo diagnostic testing and evaluation to produce results that inform decisions by the patient and their provider to ensure the right patient care in the form of additional treatment, prescription medication or a specialty referral.

The team recently proved their expertise by passing a biennial inspection administered by the College of American Pathologists, the accrediting agency for all labs found within military treatment facilities.  The inspection cited only four minor deficiencies among the 361 inspectable items.

Calloway enjoys serving in the lab because of the family-like sense of community among staff as they work together towards a common goal while supporting one another through challenges.  His biggest challenge is multitasking throughout the day to balance testing, administrative requirements and training while ensuring accuracy and patient safety.

“I enjoy…the opportunity to mentor junior Sailors,” said Calloway.  “Teaching them what it means to lead, take pride in their work, and continue growing professionally and personally as they advance in their careers.”
