CRDAMC Nurse Midwife Susan Clapp Honored with Outpatient DAISY Award

By Frank Minnie

Susan Clapp, a certified nurse midwife in the Women’s Health Clinic at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, has been recognized with the Outpatient DAISY Award.

Clapp has been a nurse for 38 years and has served at CRDAMC for 13 of those years. Her career began at age 15 as a certified nursing assistant in a nursing home, where she first learned the importance of compassion and dignity in care. She went on to become a licensed vocational nurse, a registered nurse, and eventually a certified nurse midwife, gaining experience in small rural clinics, hospitals, leadership roles, and labor and delivery units across Texas.

“My passion for women’s health led me to midwifery school,” Clapp said. “In 2012, I joined Darnall, first as a student midwife and later as a certified nurse midwife, where I continue to serve today. My journey has been shaped by a lifelong commitment to women, babies, and families at every stage of life.”

Clapp said she treasures her role in labor and delivery and postpartum care. “I love that my work allows me to usher new life into the world while also witnessing mothers being made,” she said. “Each birth is both a beginning and a transformation. It is a true honor to walk alongside families during these sacred and life-changing moments, especially those who serve and protect our country.”

Receiving the DAISY Award, Clapp said, is humbling. “Nursing and midwifery are callings of the heart. I never do this work for recognition — it is simply my privilege to serve.”
