A Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Nurse Earns the DAISY Award

By MC2 Brett Walker, WRNMMC, Command Communications

U.S. Army 1st Lt. Maria Frisone, a nurse at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), was nominated by a patient and awarded the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses (The DAISY Award) for her compassion and attention while working as a nurse at WRNMMC.

“This nurse was confidently professional and able to communicate both to me as a patient and to my doctors and family to ensure everyone involved in my care was always up to date on every detail of my care and that my care was progressing, or that my needs were met,” stated the WRNMMC patient who nominated Frisone and wishes to remain anonymous.

The DAISY Award was created — in 1999 — by The DAISY Foundation to have another way to honor nurses throughout the year beyond National Nurses’ Week. According to The DAISY Foundation, the program is now active in all 50 states and 33 other countries and territories. DAISY is an acronym for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of Patrick Barnes, who passed away from the auto-immune disease idiopathic thrombocytopenia, established the foundation and award to honor the nurses who provided his care during his illness.

WRNMMC, the world’s premier, integrated military medical center and where the nation heals our heroes, strives to provide extraordinary experiences for patients, families, and staff while driving tomorrow’s healthcare advances through education, innovation, and research.
